When I got my first resin 3D printer as a birthday gift from my wife, one of the first things I wanted to build was the incredibly detailed RoboCain from RoboCop 2.
The files were available on CGTrader, so I bought them and started printing the model in its original 1/6 scale. With well over 100 parts to print, though, I eventually got sidetracked and the project was put on hold.
A few years later, I bought a Bambu X1C filament printer and remembered my unfinished Cain project.
As they say: go big or go home.
So instead of continuing in 1/6 scale, I decided to print him again — this time in 1/3 scale.
There were a huge number of parts to produce, some of which had to be modified, and every single one went through the usual painstaking preparation process. My wife painted most of the silver parts using professional automotive paint.
I also bought a ridiculous amount of hardware for the build: nuts, bolts, washers, wiring, tubing and even a tiny working monitor.
Luckily, my buddy Paul, who was involved in the creation of the Chronicles RoboCain maquette, provided me with the original decal templates. I scaled them up to match the 1/3 model and had them printed as waterslide decals.
Once the build was finally complete, it took me another year before I worked up the motivation to tackle the intricate weathering.
It was a massive project, but I’m very happy with how Cain turned out.
Weathering photos to follow.
